Solving One-Step Equations flashcards

Say the answer out loud before you flip. Cards you miss come back sooner; cards you know come back later. That spacing is what builds long-term memory.

Card 1

What is a solution of an equation?

A value of the variable that makes the equation true.

Card 2

What is an inverse operation? What undoes adding?

An operation that undoes another one. Subtracting undoes adding (and dividing undoes multiplying).

Card 3

Solve x + 14 = 31.

x = 17. Subtract 14 from both sides.

Card 4

Solve x − 5 = −2.

x = 3. Add 5 to both sides: −2 + 5 = 3.

Card 5

Solve 5x = 45.

x = 9. Divide both sides by 5.

Card 6

Solve x/3 = −8.

x = −24. Multiply both sides by 3.

Card 7

Solve −x = −4.

x = 4. The lone minus sign means −1, so multiply both sides by −1.

Card 8

Solve (5/2)x = 10.

x = 4. Multiply both sides by the reciprocal, 2/5: 10 × 2/5 = 4.

Card 9

Solve 17 = x + 9.

x = 8. The variable can be on the right: subtract 9 from both sides to get 8 = x.

Card 10

Solve x + 2 = −10.

x = −12. Subtract 2 from both sides: −10 − 2 = −12.

Card 11

Solve 0.5x = 7.

x = 14. Divide both sides by 0.5, or multiply by 2 (since 0.5 = 1/2).

Card 12

Why can’t you multiply both sides of an equation by 0?

Both sides become 0, so you get 0 = 0 whatever x is. You lose the information about the solution.

Card 13

How do you check a solution?

Substitute it for the variable in the original equation. If both sides match, it is correct.

Card 14

What is the reciprocal of 3/7?

7/3. A number times its reciprocal is 1.
