Slope of a Line cheat sheet
Everything you need on one page. Print it, or switch on test-yourself mode to blur the answers and check your memory.
The formula
- Slope = rise ÷ run
- m = (y2 − y1) ÷ (x2 − x1)
Four types
- Positive: uphill (left to right)
- Negative: downhill
- Zero: horizontal, y = b
- Undefined: vertical, x = a
Tricks
- I before U: rise on top
- HOY VUX
- “Per” means slope (a rate)
Example
- Points (1, 1) and (5, 4)
- Rise = 3, run = 4
- m = 3/4
Formulas
- Slope formula: m = (y2 − y1) ÷ (x2 − x1) (when x2 ≠ x1)
- Horizontal line: y = b, slope is 0
- Vertical line: x = a, slope is undefined
