Solving Two-Step Equations flashcards

Say the answer out loud before you flip. Cards you miss come back sooner; cards you know come back later. That spacing is what builds long-term memory.

Card 1

What is an inverse operation?

The operation that undoes another one: addition and subtraction, multiplication and division.

Card 2

What is the first step to solve 3x + 7 = 22?

Subtract 7 from both sides to get 3x = 15.

Card 3

What is the second step after 3x = 15?

Divide both sides by 3 to get x = 5.

Card 4

Solve 5x − 10 = 20.

x = 6. Add 10 to get 5x = 30, then divide by 5.

Card 5

What must you do to the other side when you change one side?

Exactly the same thing. That keeps the equation balanced.

Card 6

What is a coefficient?

The number multiplying a variable, like the 3 in 3x.

Card 7

What is a constant?

A plain number with no variable, like the 7 in 3x + 7.

Card 8

How do you check a solution?

Substitute it for the variable. If both sides match, it is correct.

Card 9

What does SADMEP stand for?

Undo in the reverse of PEMDAS: Subtract/Add, Divide/Multiply, Exponents, Parentheses.

Card 10

Solve x/4 + 2 = 6.

x = 16. Subtract 2 to get x/4 = 4, then multiply by 4.

Card 11

Solve −2x + 1 = 9.

x = −4. Subtract 1 to get −2x = 8, then divide by −2.
