Order of Operations flashcards

Say the answer out loud before you flip. Cards you miss come back sooner; cards you know come back later. That spacing is what builds long-term memory.

Card 1

What is the order of operations?

1. Grouping (innermost first). 2. Exponents. 3. Multiplication and division, left to right. 4. Addition and subtraction, left to right.

Card 2

Which comes first, multiplication or division?

Neither one. They share a level, so do whichever comes first when reading left to right.

Card 3

Evaluate 40 − 12 + 5.

33. Left to right: 40 − 12 = 28, then 28 + 5 = 33.

Card 4

Evaluate 6 + 2 × 33.

60. Exponent first: 33 = 27. Then 2 × 27 = 54. Then 6 + 54 = 60.

Card 5

Evaluate 32 ÷ 8 × 2.

8. Left to right: 32 ÷ 8 = 4, then 4 × 2 = 8.

Card 6

What is −24, and what is (−2)4?

−24 = −16 and (−2)4 = 16. In the first, the exponent touches only the 2. In the second, the parentheses put the negative sign inside the power.

Card 7

How does a fraction bar work in the order of operations?

It acts like parentheses around the top and around the bottom. Work out each one, then divide (as long as the bottom is not 0).

Card 8

How do you work with parentheses inside parentheses?

Start with the innermost pair and work outward, using the usual order inside each one.

Card 9

Evaluate 12 ÷ (5 − 5).

Undefined. The parentheses equal 0, and you cannot divide by 0.

Card 10

Evaluate x2 + 3 when x = −2.

7. Substitute with parentheses: (−2)2 + 3 = 4 + 3 = 7.

Card 11

Does addition always come before subtraction in PEMDAS?

No. Addition and subtraction tie, so work them left to right: 18 − 7 + 3 = 14, not 18 − 10 = 8.

Card 12

What does 5(2 + 3) mean, and what is its value?

It means 5 × (2 + 3). Parentheses first: 5 × 5 = 25.
